On Saturday, Nov 10, 2012, 20 PotLuck members and friends gathered for wine and cheese at Laura Kaster’s Heather Lane home in Princeton to hear her friend, celebrated author Dorothy Foltz Gray, read from her profoundly moving book, With Her and Without Her: A Memoir of Being and Losing A Twin. Note: Shortly after this event, Dorothy won a national literary award for this book.
In 1949, Dorothy and her identical twin sister, Deane, were born. In 1981, Deane, then a psychologist, was fatally shot by one of her patients. The book by this award-winning poet and journalist (and extraordinary person) describes growing up in a world of shared thoughts, memories, and plans and the struggle to survive the loss of her twin.
Here’s Laura’s review on amazon.com: “Who has not faced issues of identity, autonomy, and separation or yearned for that perfection of empathy and total understanding? In this amazing and lyrical memoir, these universal issues are freshly examined through the unique lens of identical twins. This story is a tribute to those two twin sisters, one who died tragically and violently and the author whose brave honesty lets her paint vivid and poetic scenes of their life shared and shattered, and a single life forged out of love, pain and determination.”
