The following notes were taken on December 7th, 2014, at our event featuring Julia Doemland, Ph.D., by steering committee member Naomi Drew.
For a link to the exercises Julia used, scroll down to the bottom of this page.
Dr. Julia Doemland is an Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner, an NLP practitioner, and a retired professor at Rutgers University in exercise and sports science. Here is the gist of Julia’s engaging presentation to 50 women at our large group gathering:
Your body image affects your energies and vice versa. In addition, your body affects your body image.
Every cell in your body is a tiny battery. Cells communicate via ultraviolet light. Every organ has its own energy profile.
Your heart is the largest electromagnetic organ in your body. The energy of your heart radiates out fifteen feet beyond your body. We have energy fields. Cellphones, microwaves, electricity towers are all sources of electromagnetic energy, which interferes with our natural energy fields.
If your energies are out of balance, this will manifest physically. We’re in harmony when our energies are balanced within and throughout our bodies.
There’s a beauty and grace about how we’ve evolved over time. There’s something in our bodies that helps us deal with energies that aren’t good for us, We have the ability to adapt our energies and help them work better for us.
Much of this is dependent on our mindset. A mindset is a set of beliefs reflected in the body and capable of overriding our biology.
Ellen Langer out of Harvard did research on aging and attitude, particularly “acting as if.” In the 1970’s, she studied a group of older people looking at all the markers of aging, e.g., visual acuity, hearing, cognitive, balance, memory, and more. She conducted pre- and post- testing. The group she studied was put in a setting that mimicked the 1950’s. The control group, on the other hand, was told to reminisce for a week. The experimental group in the 50s setting for a week ended up testing “younger” in all the areas that were measured. The test was replicated again around 2009. It was called “The Younger Ones.” BBC filmed and aired it. Ellen Langer also wanted to study how the mindset would change if we changed outlook on exercise. Housekeepers who were taught to see that their work was indeed exercise ended up dropping weight, having a lower hip to waist ratio compared with a control group who were given no instructions,
Carol Dweck has done some seminal research on growth mindsets vs. fixed mindsets. http://mindsetonline.com/whatisit/about/
Alia Crum out of Yale found that mindset affects weight gain. Your mindset makes your body align with what the mind believes. http://goodthinkinc.com/speaking/alia-crum/
Julia: “Thought by thought, feeling by feeling, mindset by mindset, we create our bodies.”
If you’re hooked up to an EKG and you experience frustration – the line is jagged and incoherent. That affects the rest of your body. Moment by moment, thought by thought we literally create our bodies, and our bodies create our reality.
Words also have energetic properties.
Feeling appreciation on an EKG looks like peaceful waves – coherent, balanced. Energy needs to move in a balanced way.
The beliefs we hold can literally override our biology. Dr. Emoto did experiments with water and how it changes according to the words we speak. Kind, affirming words will have water crystals look symmetrical and beautiful under a microscope. Hurtful, negative words will have water crystals looking disorganized and diffuse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvzsjcBtx8
Everything we’ve ever experienced in our lives goes into our bodies—things people have said, cultural images, things we’ve lived though, comparisons. Our body image exists outside of our conscious awareness. We don’t choose a body image, we simply have one.
Negative thoughts create disruptions in energy. Energy flows where attention goes. Julia urges all of us to do the energy exercises daily on the sheet that was passed out. It’s best to do them at your lowest energy points of the day.
Also, for 21 days – write down 3 things you’re grateful to your body for and explain why.
Moment by moment, thought by thought, you create your body and your body creates your reality. The energy exercises will help you create the reality you want.
